Key skills on a resume are the knowledge and skills that a person needs to possess in order to successfully perform their job. It is important for an IT specialist to not only possess certain technical competencies, but also to match the position in terms of personal qualities.
For example, for a cybersecurity specialist, the key skills in a resume will be not only the ability to work with Linux, Windows, DLP, SIEM, Kubernetes, program in Python and Bash, but also to be attentive to look for vulnerabilities, to be able to focus, to see the consequences of certain decisions.
ICONText HR Manager Daria Panova:
Key skills are an important section in a resume, a squeeze of skills and abilities, acquired knowledge and experience that help to do the job more efficiently and achieve results faster in a particular position. They summarize all the experience gained and help to understand whether the candidate is suitable for the requirements of the vacancy.
To get the desired position a specialist needs to correctly indicate in the resume their knowledge and skills. It is important to describe them in detail, beautifully and truthfully. It is not worth writing about what you do not know how to do.

Types of professional skills
Professional skills are categorized into groups:
  • Hard skills - these skills are based on experience and technical proficiency. An example of such skills on a resume is the mastery of different programming languages, knowledge of algorithms and data structures. Hard skills are essential for the professional success of a specialist. Without key skills on a resume, it will most likely not even be considered.
  • Soft skills - personal qualities that are necessary for successful work. They are related to interpersonal relations, communication, ability to adapt to changing situations.
For simplicity, soft skills can be divided into three categories:
  • Organizational - includes the skills to effectively plan and manage time, organize projects, and remove obstacles that arise on the way to achieving a goal. IT specialists should be ready to self-organize, be able to work under tight deadlines and meet deadlines.
  • Leadership skills on a resume are especially important for an IT professional who often works in a team or manages a project. A professional needs to be able to motivate and inspire a team, resolve conflicts and make decisions, develop strategic thinking and the ability to innovate.
  • Communicative - this is the ability to communicate, to find a common language with colleagues and clients. Many people think in vain that IT specialists are closed people. As for salespeople, designers, teachers, it is important for them to conduct dialogs both orally and in writing, not to be afraid to ask questions, to find a common language with clients.
Remember, a resume is your business card and if it is written correctly, your chances of getting an interview will be high. Be sure to mention key skills in your resume, detail hard and soft skills.

Professional skills on a resume
Professional skills on a resume are usually listed in a separate section. But, if the employer provides his template where there are no divisions by professional skills, then technical skills are better mentioned in the work experience.
Technical skills can be categorized by proficiency level:
  • Basic level - usually specialists of this level can perform tasks that require uncomplicated technical knowledge and skills.
  • Medium level - assumes that the specialist has deeper knowledge and experience in specific areas of IT. The specialist is able to solve more complex technical tasks, apply his knowledge in software development, testing, support and optimization, network and database administration.
  • Expert level - implies deep knowledge, extensive experience in different areas of IT. Thanks to their skills, such specialists can manage large projects, make decisions in critical situations.
Maria Mitina, HR Manager at Parallels:
The most important thing in a resume is to specify the main technologies and tools you know how to work with. Of course, brevity is the sister of talent, but it doesn't help here: for each job you need to specify the tasks, technologies, and languages you have worked with. Often, even jobs with the same job title (for example, "CC+ Developer") in the same company may require different tools and additional technologies. The point is that different teams are working on different tasks, and a particular tool may be popular in each team, and proficiency in that tool will attract attention.

How to write a resume
There are a few secrets to a successful resume:
  • Positioning. Before responding to a job posting, carefully review the employer's requirements and tailor your resume to meet them. Highlight key skills on your resume that directly relate to the stated requirements. This will help the employer understand that this is the position you want, rather than sending a copy of your resume to everyone.
  • Relevance to the position. The list of skills for the resume should show that you have the right experience and qualifications for the position. Describe in detail your professional and academic history, mention the projects you have participated in, tell about your achievements in the profession. This way, the employer will see that no one can do better than you for this position.
  • Brevity. Your resume should be as concise and specific as possible. Employers typically receive hundreds of resumes and don't have time to read long essays. Present the key skills on your resume in the form of short information points, using active verbs and concrete facts. This will help the employer assess your potential and decide whether to invite you for an interview.
  • Proper wording. A resume should be written in a competent and professional manner. Check it for grammatical and spelling errors. Pay attention to formatting and structure. The resume should be easy and comfortable to read.
  • Photo availability. Choosing from hundreds, the employer will pay attention to the resume with your photo. The picture should be good and clear. For a resume, you need to take a photo against a neutral background in business style clothing without extraneous objects.

How to avoid mistakes in your resume
  • You don't need to elaborate on personal hobbies not related to IT. Employers don't care what you do outside of work: watch TV shows or embroider cross-stitch. It is better to list your hobbies briefly.
  • Write about yourself in simple words, do not use templates. It is better to insert vivid verbs that demonstrate your activity. Write: I created, developed, organized, invented. The employer will immediately realize that you are not sitting still.
  • Be careful! Sometimes employers specify that when you send your resume, you must include a keyword. If the applicant does not pay attention to this, most likely, his resume will not even be considered.
  • Don't forget the skills section. Tell about your main specialization, note key skills, narrowly focused knowledge, personal qualities.
  • There is no need to specify what is already obvious. For example, if you are applying for a job as a machine learning specialist, your basic computer skills will not be suitable for a resume. And without this point, the employer realizes that you are a confident PC user and know how to search for information on the Internet. It is better to note that you know how to work with Python, Java, R.
  • Do not forget to show that you do not stand still, and strive to develop. Be sure to mention in your resume the trainings and courses you have taken. By the way, you can replenish your knowledge at the CODDY programming school.
  • Before sending your resume, be sure to check it for grammatical errors and typos.
Corinne Mills, Managing Director of Personal Career Management, a coaching company:
Simply stating your strengths is not enough - you also need to back them up. For example, in addition to stating that you have good communication skills, you should give an example of how to use them effectively: I run a corporate monthly blog as part of our social media strategy.
