From Bank to School: How CODDY change the lives of businessmen and children
Opening your own business is always risky and requires certain skills, full involvement and love for your business from an entrepreneur. It can be difficult to start, and buying a franchise can make the path of an entrepreneur easier.
Elvira, the franchisee of the CODDY programming school for children in Krasnogorsk, will tell her story and give a couple of tips to those who are just thinking of buying a franchise.
CODDY class in Krasnogorsk.
Elvira has been cooperating with CODDY for 5 years – now she runs a school with 140 students and an annual turnover of ~ 7.5 million rubles.
Elvira, did you have your own business before partnering with CODDY? What prompted you to purchase a franchise?
I worked with Oksana (CEO of CODDY school) at Sberbank, we were brought together several times by fate to participate in corporate events. I watched with delight Oksana's clear, systematic, responsible approach to business. Everything her department needed to do was always done at the highest level.
I observed and analyzed her actions: as a mega-sized figure, she descended to the Ground and unobtrusively, like a magician, corrected the steps of her subordinates, influenced by the power of words and achieved stunning success. I admired it back then. Then Oksana went on maternity leave, and I left the Bank.
I changed my field of activity and went into education.
I headed a 9-group private kindergarten. I raised it from "zero" to 100% load (180 people). This was not enough for me, and at the same time I began to develop additional education. She opened 17 directions of various sections, clubs and studios. Everything was going well, but my soul required something unique and allowing you to develop several competencies on one dope.
I began to study the market, and, fate and no other way, brought Oksana and me together again. I called her and she said that we could talk for days, but it's more realistic to meet live with whom I could develop in this direction. Our meeting took place three days later and I left, drowned in dreams and plans about the business of my dreams.
Then our private garden was transferred to the state administration, and I began to develop CODDY as an independent structure.
What attracted you to the CODDY franchise, and why did you choose it?
Scale, a systematic approach, the possibility of reaching children from 5 to 18 years old, a wide range of courses, methodical real support, the possibility of phased purchase of courses and the complete absence of violence in terms of purchasing courses.
What do you like more: running your own business or working on a franchise?
I currently work for an employer and for myself, and these are two completely different things.
I look forward to meeting with parents, teachers and the guys at CODDY every Sunday. This is my elixir, my pill for all kinds of ailments.
When you work for an employer, you feel at the end of the working day as if you were unloading wagons, there is so much left unsaid inside. And at your own work, you dream that the day does not end, every day gives birth to new ideas and thoughts.
Was it difficult to open a business in your region?
At the very beginning, it was difficult to rock the people, since most of the choice of the residents of our city was towards dancing, music, art, football. But, I was sure that over time, programming would be a priority choice.
How does CODDY help you cope with difficulties?
Now, if there are questions about the choice of a course or failures in programs, this is solved online. There wasn't a single situation where I called and didn't get an answer. I clearly know who I can call and on what issue. Oksana is still in the access zone, she runs a giant company, but she cares about everyone.
In addition to administrative support, we have a chat for all partners infected with the love of programming! This is a group of like-minded people who will solve issues and generate ideas on 24/7/365 until the situation is completely resolved.
How did you attract your first customers and hire employees?
"Word of mouth" and high–quality service are the best attractions.
I clearly understood that each client is unique and that you need to work 100% with each one. Openness and honesty with clients led to the fact that one client brought three more, and at least ten talked about how cool he was and which school he sent his child to study.
Free master classes: mobile and stationary. It was important for us to be talked about.
I found my first teachers at the College of Information Technology in Krasnogorsk. I organized a meeting with students of 2-3 courses, got the contacts of the best students and communicated personally. Then our first teachers graduated from college, enrolled in universities and recommended work at our school by personal example. This is how our team grew, which I am proud of. Many meetings are held with each teacher on a regular basis.
How do you interact with the parents of the students? What are your methods of building a trusting relationship with them?
At the stage of acquaintance, we tell them about the school and lay in their minds that we are together forever, and not for one course, and explain why.
We give feedback on the results of the master classes. We give recommendations on how and what to pull up to be in the desired group, for example, if the student does not pull.
We monitor each student and we always have something to talk about with the parent. Parents are thrilled that they have their agents in our person who help them see and discover new facets of their children through us. Parents come to school to chat, they can call with a request, they always know that we are nearby and that we are about children.
We protect projects, and then we post each project on social networks. Parents are so looking forward to these moments to proudly show all their friends and family how cool he is as a parent, unlike those who still go to only one class, and what kind of son / daughter they have, because most parents are very far from technology (we have such statistics).
We hold parent conferences where I talk about the school, what goals we set for the year and what results we achieved.
How do you assess the success of your students? Do you use any specific methods and criteria? How do you encourage them?
Yes, of course. We have our own motivation system. We use monetary currency, every child from the age of five is financially literate, knows what he is saving up for and how to earn the desired prize (for example, stickers, flash drives, T-shirt, rucksack, etc.).
What achievements of your school would you like to share?
60% of children switch from one course to another without changing their direction (to dance or art). Sometimes parents decide to try to study at another programming school, but the children come back anyway.
We are recommended and talked about. Some teachers earn such a reputation that students ask to get to them (for example, in one of the three minecraft groups to a certain teacher).
It often happens that several children (two or three) from the same family study with us together.
One student, who studied with us for three years, is now studying at Sirius, won two All-Russian Olympiads in mathematics and computer science in 2022-2023 and earned 600,000 rubles.
Our students are trained at the sites of Sberbank and Yandex; one student enrolled in the college of information Technology and dreams, as his teacher once did, of working at our school (he comes and helps teach classes, trains).
Elvira about her school
❝ We are a single mechanism: Parents–Teachers–Students ❞
If you could go back and change something in your path as a franchisee, what would it be?
I did not go to get a job, but would immediately develop only my business (Because of the pandemic, and then the special operation. There are obligations that needed to be stably closed; there was no airbag).
What are the key skills and qualities necessary for the successful work of a franchisee in the educational field?
Systems thinking;
Communication skills;
Ability to work in a team;
Knowledge of psychology (peculiarities of the ages we work with);
Love for children;
Client orientation.
What advice would you give to entrepreneurs who are just planning to purchase a franchise?
1. To purchase;
2. Don't be afraid and act, you need determination;
3. Realistically assess your capabilities and listen to someone who will advise from CODDY, this is important!
At the first meeting with Oksana, she clearly said: "It won't be easy, the main thing is to believe and not be afraid, to act! Your expenses will amount to so much, there will be no less!" She laid out several options and left the choice to me
4. Don't be afraid to ask questions, but count on yourself. The franchise is a skeleton, a basis, but it's not a magic wand that will do everything for you!
5. Communicate and partner, take part in various collaborations.
CODDY School in Krasnogorsk often conducts master classes and cooperates with other development centers.
What is the key to successful franchise management in the educational field?
In a team without which there will be no success.
Start your own business and develop it with like-minded people together with CODDY. Our programming school franchise is your step towards a dream.
